Defining a Researchable Question Workshop:
What do you really need to know?

One of the most difficult steps in research is framing a good research question. We developed this workshop after finding this step especially challenging in our work with community-based research. Communities are typically looking for answers to practical problems like, "Should we close our local school and consolidate?" or "What will result from changes in land ownership in our community?" As stated, these are not researchable questions. Research alone cannot tell us whether we should or should not do something. It cannot tell us what will happen in the future. Research is about understanding what is, and what has been. During this 2-hour workshop, we use a variety of interactive methods to help participants frame research questions that will get them the information they need to inform local decision-making and action.

To arrange a workshop in your area, call or email the National Community Forestry Center, Northern Forest Region c/o Yellow Wood Associates, St. Albans, VT at 800-727-5404 or yellowwood@yellowwood.org
